WEFA ended in Abuja yesterday with high hope for renewed hope for investment in Africa. The deliberations so far was anchored on the need for all inclusive growth for Africa. There are huge opportunities in Africa for economic growth and development. In the last 5 years, Africa witnessed increased foreign direct investment due to returns and opportunity for business expansion. Africa will continue to be attractive for business men and women across the globe. The local investors are making huge investments and are getting good returns. According to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, he would have stopped his humongous investments running into billions of dollars if there were no growth or returns in Africa and that there are lots of positivity in Africa than negative news.
There was a consensus that the issue of security is fast becoming an albatross to development in Africa. Government must deploy resources to fight and bring to barest level, terrorism and other security challenges. A case in point was the issue of over 200 girls abducted in their school three weeks ago by a criminal group called Boko Haram. The Nigerian government under President Goodluck Jonathan promised to find the girls and that an end is in sight for the insurgents in North Eastern part of Nigeria. He thanked the delegates for attending the World Economic Forum,Africa despite recent threats to safety caused by the insurgents. The capital city of Abuja had been bombed twice in two weeks before the commencement of the forum.
Corruption is another enemy of progress in Africa. Africa's level of poverty stems from corruption because a big chunk of national budgets are consumed by corruption.African leaders must address this by showing stronger will for the eradication of corruption.
Constant electric power is needed if Nigeria must increase local production and consequently domestic output. It is believed that Nigeria must address this problem too in shortest time possible.
Lastly, there were more promises from participants to cooperate with Africa for business and technical assistance. China promised to expand her investment in Africa .The country had already committed $30bn to this cause. Other countries pledged to assist and donate to key sectors of the Nigerian economy. Thus ended the 3-day event that brought economic opportunities to Africa and which will surely benefit Nigeria.
