In a country where supply of basic amenities is a almost non-existence,the government is busy arresting journalists doing their legitimate jobs. The three Journalists were earlier arrested and detained for beyond legally accepted period of time. They were later released when it became obvious that the action was unbecoming of a government preaching democratic norms.
What is more worrisome is that the presidential adviser, who used to be on the side of the people,Dr Reuben Abati supported the action of government. This was a man i had so much respect for while at th Guardian newspapers. He wrote glowingly about the neglect of the oppressed and how insensitive government was at that time.We all love him,I adore him and his courage.Whenever he appeared on TV, I just love to listen to him.His thoughts had depth and his words were rich. The Guardian newspapers was a must read for me especially on Sundays and Fridays. How time changes things, people and their belief systems.Perhaps some people no matter how solid their foundation is,they do have a price after all.I remember his criticism of Femi Fani-Kayode while in OBJ's government at that time.
Unfortunately in Nigeria we are quick to forget history. If you are not on the good side of history, history will never be kind to you.No government ever fought the fourth estate of the realm and won.Interestingly,it was the same journalists that wrote to the whole world to see the forces against GEJ in his bid to claim the presidency. The press fought for him and he won,the press will fight for itself and will always win against this same government. Most times the press are with the oppressed and it was a partnership that triumphs.
For those who are mouth piece of government, let them continue to be anti-people,they will get their reward sooner than they think.I have a record of many of them that were used and dumped. It's the penchant of every dictatorship: get the best of those opposed to us, use them and destroy their carrier.Recently one of them wrote a book about his sojourn in government and i began to laugh.he will never get a good return to his much loved profession.Perhaps it was a carrier gamble for some of them.
I wrote this piece while my generator set is on, I have a relative who is seriously sick but we resorted to private hospitals because public hospital is just like private. In actual fact they are death beds. The road in my area is terrible and couldn't go out whenever it rains. My children attend private schools.Security has become a nightmare in Nigeria. A group came up and were killing and maiming Nigerians and all GEJ can say is to give them amnesty. The government has no courage in the face of terror by a criminal group but suddenly it had courage to arraign journalists for doing their duties.God help us.
