If you have been powerful once, you will still
carry some scent of power. This is the story of Turai Yar’Adua, the wife of the
former president of Nigeria who died in May 5, 2010 after prolong illness.
There has been a battle between the former first lady and the new first lady,
Patience Jonathan over who owns a parcel of land in a choice area in Abuja. The
case has been in court after pleas to settle the matter amicably fell on deaf
ears. Now an Abuja high court has ruled that the FCT authority erred by
revoking the certificate of occupancy earlier issued to Turai citing public
interest.
While Turai was in control of the country, yes she
was in control of country because she wielded so much power albeit silently
during the tenure of her husband. Her control was so much that the Vice
President then, GEJ was hardly heard in scheme of things. He was more of
ceremonial Vice president. It was this development that laid the foundation for
the enmity between the wives. Turai’s ego was shattered the day the husband
died to the extent that leaving Aso Rock, the seat of power was difficult as
she tarried beyond period expected of her. She gave little comfort to new
occupants of Aso Rock and she didn’t deserve much.
Based on the past events and Turai’s unenviable new
position, she will give all she can muscle to get whatever belongs to her. On
the land matter, she won. Is her win saying even in death, the name of the
husband still click with many or the strength of legal redress in the face of
brutal power of incumbency can give succour? We are waiting but surely it’s and
Herculean task to win a boxing round when almost all the match officials are
friends of your opponent. For the country, do we really need this when more
women are dropping out of school; more taking to prostitution due to poverty
and child mortality rate still high
