JUNE 12: 20 YEARS AFTER

On June 12, 2013 it was exactly 20 years after the freest election in Nigeria was unjustly annulled by Ibrahim Babangida who was the military president of Nigeria then.Nigerians voted Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.Nigerians voted for him en mass and he won gallantly from about 60% of the election results so far released before the remaining were withheld by the military junta.

Professor Humphrey Nwosu who headed the electoral commission in 1993 was put under house arrest by Babangida to forestall the release of the remaining results. The results  were not announced until 5 years ago when it didn't matter by the professor.Abiola won the presidential election of June 12,1993.He was deniecd his right and the whole nation was thrown into needless chaos that claimed many lives.During the crisis that followed the annulment the nation groaned and Nigerians suffered as there was Nation wide strike spear- headed by NUPENG under comrade Frank Kokori. The nation was brought to its knees.

Abiola moved to claim his mandate in Ipetodo area of Lagos in June 11,1994 and was arrested by Abacha and eventually died in Prison in what could be described as a state murder.

 The International Conspiracy
At the heart of the struggle for the actualization of June 12 mandate freely given to Chief M.K.O Abiola of Social Democratic Party by majority of Nigerians when Abacha expired on June 8, 1998, the US sent delegates to Nigeria. The visit was questionable because Abiola did not get much support from them when he was denied his mandate and while in incarceration for 4 years. Among the delegate sent by the international communities were Susan Rice and Thomas Pickering. They held meetings with Abdusalami Abubakar who was head of Military government in 1998 and Chief Abiola. In one of such meetings Abiola collapsed and died gasping for breath. He was served tea and that was all he took before he died exactly one month after the death of Abacha. Someone who had been in prison for 4 year under dehumanizing condition will just fall down and died. The whole world knew that the natural thing to do after the demise of Abacha was for Abiola to claim his mandate and they collaborated to eliminate him. All those behind the state murder will account for their deeds wgen the time comes.
The west and countries that have been involved with years of slavery and exploitation of Africa and Chief MKO Abiola had been on logger heads over the need for them to pay reparation to Africa. He was the voice of Africa on this project and those involved in dragging Africa backward were not happy with him. If Abiola had the presidential  platform, it would be an additional voice as a president apart from his immense wealth, it would give him ample opportunity to get support of all African leaders for successful reparation or compensation for all the evils of colonization. Many were not surprised that Abiola died when they were around. It is not the desire of the power that- be outside of Nigeria that someone that is capable of delivering democratic dividend should be in power  because it will put an end to neo-colonization .We see finger prints of  colonial master up till today in all our affairs. They are largely involved in corruption in Nigeria especially in the oil sector. They wield a lot of influence in our economy. Politically it’s convenience to have someone who is dishonest and hate his people to be in power. No one ever opposed them and stay in power. They know the southern part of Nigeria are well to educated and sophisticated to be ignored and that is why it was impossible for Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe ,Chief Obafemi Awolowo to be president. On Abiola they made a mistake and it was too late for them to realize it. Perhaps they underestimated the power of activism in Chief M.K.O Abiola despite his humongous wealth and influence worldwide. If you look deeply since independence they have installed stooges and wicked leader tacitly for Nigeria. They have made sure that power was left with the North even under military rule. Any military ruler that never listened to them did not last.

THE NIGERIAN CONSPIRATORS
The convenient t way forward for them after they collaborated to eliminate Chief M.K.O Abiola was to install his mortal enemy Olusegun Obasanjo.Obasanjo was imprisoned under state law for coup plot which is treasonable charge same way Chief Abiola was charged but he was released and pardoned for him to be qualified for next use. He was chosen to placate the South West for the pains of June 12 annulment while they forget that the only solution was to recognize in entirety the June 12 1993 struggle signified by Abiola. They knew OBJ will perennially do their biddings and surely he did beyond their expectations. He forgot all about Abiola whom he hated since their primary school days in Abeokuta. They both hail from same state in Nigeria. Throughout his eight years of misrule as a civilian he did nothing and achieved nothing because he was not really elected but imposed by the retreating military under the watch of foreign enemy of our land. Obasanjo boldly canvassed at different occasions that Abiola was not the messiah we needed, but during his meaningless reign, he was not anything near a messiah.
OBJ sought to perpetuate himself in power but Nigerians sent him packing with one voice.OBJ and the military decided to play kite with our destiny by installing Shehu Musa Yar’Adua  as president in 2007.Yaradua himself admitted that there were flaws in the electoral process that brought him to power.OBJ was at the forefront of Yar’dua campaign even while the man was seriously sick. He gave us a sickly president and a clay foot Vice-President so that when one finally dies another will naturally become president. The choice of Yar’dua was to thank the North for all they did for him.
When Yar’dua died in 2010 due to health challenges that has been there for years, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was installed to carry on the agenda of power that- be.GEJ was a rookie and still behave so after 3 years in the saddle.OBJ was GEJ’s chief campaigner curiously too in the run to presidential election in 2011 after he finished the term of late president Musa Yar’dua. GEJ won with massive fraud during the elections but Nigerians were arm strung.
One thing is clear in the last 20 years nothing has changed better for Nigerians. Electricity supply has gotten to lowest level compared with 20 years ago. Unemployment has quadrupled more than 20 years ago. Health and infrastructural facilities have gotten worse more that 20 years ago. Hunger is everywhere amidst mounting revenue from crude oil compared to 20 years ago. Security has reached a stage that Nigerians are not sure of reaching their destinations leaving home. In fact people were bombed in homes and places of worship. Kidnapping has become a way of life. All these were alien to Nigerians 20 years ago; that was why the election was free and fair in the first place. People who are well discerning know that Nigeria cannot get better by all the leaders we have been having because they were not genuinely elected but imposed on us. Any government that is not representative cannot be responsible and any government that is not responsible cannot be reliable.
The solution is to go back to where we fell. Abiola cannot be brought back to life now but we can do all he stood for. We should immortalize him and recognize him as a former president. The electoral process that brought him to power in a very clean election should be explored. All unsung heroes of June 12 should be honoured. Some are still alive while some are dead. But all these might be difficult to implement because the power behind the annulment are still around. David mark who sits as head of the senate of the national assembly is there, he was part of the military junta in 1993. Will he ever approve anything for Abiola? Tom Ikimi who was going all over the world then criticizing Abiola as chairman of National Republican Convention is the arrow head putting APC together. Abiola’s running mate in June12 1993 presidential election, Babagana Kingibe came out during the government of late Musa Yar’dua as secretary the Federal Government and he was booted out not long later. Where is he now? Funny enough people like Bola Tinubu who were opposed to him are collaborating. Seriously where is Association for Better Nigeria under Arthur Nzeribe? Where is Youth Earnestly Ask For Abacha? Why is it difficult for people who are among the pro-democracy groups then who are in power now to do lofty things for Abiola? Many were even against GEJ for renaming Unilag after Abiola. As for those who were against the renaming of Unilag after Abiola because they finished from the school and prefer leaving the name like that; we know it is for their selfish reason. Abiola gave millions for education in length and breadth of Nigeria. Unilag benefited from his largesse while alive. Students of the university protested as sponsored by the university community but unfortunately many of the youths were not born during the struggle and some were toddlers then. It is a shame on Yoruba race for politicizing honouring of one of their own. That explains why Abiola was easily killed-the Yorubas betrayed Abiola and if not for the media that stood for justice, Abiola gallantry will have been forgotten. In South West what have all the governors done so far for Abiola? It is a shame. Perhaps GEJ wants to take the shine off some of them so they took time to criticize him on renaming of Unilag after Abiola. Some nominated their wives and members of their families for important posts in Nigeria but what about Abiola’s children?
It’s noteworthy to mention some of the heroes of the June 12 struggle who are not tired in the last twenty years and those that fought a good fight till they breathed their last. Among those still alive is Prof Wole Soyinka, Frank Kokori, Femi Falana, Yinka and Okei-Odumakin, among others. We cannot forget late Pa Abraham Adesanya, Pa Anthony Enahoro, Pa Alfred Rewane and those killed by security operatives during protests that greeted June 12 annulment.Unfortunately some of those in the struggle have fallen by the wayside by running after their own selfish agenda but history will never be kind to them. For someone like me, the struggle continues. Someone laid down his life believing that other will carry on with the struggle when he dies. Abiola’s struggle is our struggle as a nation we will only stop until victory is achieved.
