The approval of $1bn security loan requested by President Goodluck Jonathan by the Senate on Thursday was one of the best decisions the house took in a long while. It is a big relief for me as Nigeria takes a big step at fighting the boko haram brutish sect to a halt.
There was pandemonium in the Senate during the session where the decision was reached.Unbelievably, lawmakers from opposition parties especially APC, were against the approval of the loan. I am still wondering on which side of the divide, some legislators belong. This is not a time for party politics. This is a period for building a cohesive national front to confront the insurgency killing and displacing our compatriots. Some of the Senators had queried the suitability of this request by the president since defence budget is the highest in the last five years or so. I agree with those who said we spent so much on defence lately but that is a matter we all can demand for explanations later from the executive and Army hierarchy. We are in a period of national emergency.
The nation is a war situation. It is easy for most of us down South to criticize government actions on security spending because we still sleep cosy in our big beds, go to work quietly and come back home same way daily. We send our children to school, they do exams and give us their reports and we are happy. We all sign big contracts,go to banks without looking over our shoulders for any danger. On daily basis we get out and go to markets to sell goods and buy same without hassles.
